Twenty years, briefly

The short history matters for one reason: we've watched this industry promise a revolution roughly every four years, and we can tell you which ones were real.

  1. 2005

    The habitat idea

We started with the view that an organization's website should function as a place rather than a publication. At the time that mostly meant content management systems and member logins, which were expensive and awkward. The idea ran ahead of the tooling.

  2. 2008 to 2012

    Social and mobile

Organizations moved onto Facebook, then panicked about owning nothing. Phones arrived and every site had to be rebuilt. We learned that the answer was never picking a side. Organizations need reach on public platforms and a home they control.

  3. 2013 to 2020

    The platform era

Good hosted products showed up for most common needs, and honest advice often meant telling a client to buy rather than build. Custom work narrowed to the parts that make an organization specific.

  4. 2021 to now

    AI-native delivery

The bottleneck moved off writing code. That changes what a small organization can afford and what a two-person shop can deliver. It's the largest shift in twenty years, and unlike most of them it showed up in the work rather than the pitch.

Send a paragraph about your organization and the problem in front of you. We'll tell you whether we're the right shop, what we'd build, and what it costs. If we're not the right shop, we'll say so and point you somewhere better.
